I don’t see the appeal, but for some reason, whenever I ask Aurora what her favorite animal is she tells me it’s a pig. I remember when we visited Nebraska a few years ago and went to the county fair, we toured the livestock barns and when we got to the pigs she burst in to terrified tears! After such a traumatic first meet n’ greet, I’m a little surprised that piggies were her pick, but she’s been unwavering in her animal favoritism for the past several months! Because I knew she would be ecstatic about it, and because it’s finally feeling like spring this week, I threw together a farm sensory bin for the kids to play with this morning.
Using a few common kitchen and play items from around the house, I was able to create different areas on the farm for each of the animals. We have the play dough (recipes here) for the beloved pig, water for the duck pond, unpopped popcorn for the cows and goats, and the other animals are free to roam about the shredded paper fields. The Safari Ltd Farm TOOB animals were perfect for this bin, I am really head over heels for all of their themed sets!
We’ve been reading Charlotte’s Web for awhile and so the pig was (of course) named Wilbur. Here he is sporting his mud cape so that he doesn’t get cold in his pen!
Play-Doh is always a favorite for my little ones, so that was the first area to be explored! All of the animals piled in to the pen for a party, and when it was time to go to the duck pond and wash off, Aurora was thrilled to find that they had left a whole bunch of footprints in the dough… Those party animals. 馃槈
The animals rolled about in the field of corn, much as a child would in a ball pit. I think they were playing hide and seek with one another if I remember the kids’ narrative correctly.
Since we used play dough we already had on hand, this bin literally took about three minutes to throw together… I love activities like that! And, while they were singing Old McDonald on repeat all morning, I even managed to get a few chores done! I’d say this bin was a win for all of us!
